Academic Courses and Research

Dr. Albert Thomas

Assistant Professor, IIT Bombay

"At the Construction Management Division of Civil Engineering-IIT Bombay, different dimensions of Lean Construction are being taught extensively in our existing construction management courses. This unique approach helps the students to easily learn the contrasting aspects of traditional construction practices in and lean construction across the construction management areas such as contracting, planning and execution. On the research front, new dimensions are explored at the intersection Lean and Simulation methods, Lean and Circular Economy, Lean and Sustainability and similar others. Similarly, the Lean based external funded projects undertaken at IIT Bombay are mainly tailored towards effective implementation of various Lean techniques at construction sites, and the research outcomes are published in reputed journals and presented at international forum such as IGLC and ISARC, ARCOM and similar others"

BTech Project and PhD work are in progress in the area of Lean. We planned to float an elective in Lean *PhD work is in the area of "Investigation on the Digital Transformation and Its Impact in AEC's with the Lean Perspective"
*Btech Project titled "Quantification of Wastes during Finishing Works and Application of Lean Principles in Construction Project Execution"

Dr Shobha Ramalingam

Associate Professor, NICMAR University

In a pursuit to sensitize students towards ‘Zero Lean Waste’, Prof. (Dr.) Anil Kashyap, Director General, NICMAR, initiated a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project between students of Nottingham Trent University (NTU), UK and NICMAR, Pune.
The project was rolled out as a competition for a period of 15 weeks from March to July 2022 wherein 40 post-graduate students from the school of project engineering and construction management from NICMAR, Pune and 30 post-graduate students from the school of architecture and built environment in NTU, UK participated. The objective of the project was to emphasize the link between Lean and Sustainability. To this end, the cross-national teams identified Lean wastes on construction project sites, evaluated their negative impacts on UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and proposed strategies to minimize them with a Lean mindset. The project was supervised by 8 NICMAR and 2 NTU faculty. Students reported the collaborative exercise to be a rich learning experience with an international flavor in their curriculum that exposed them to differences in construction practices across countries apart from enabling them to hone their team skills to work in a cross-cultural environment.
The competition was assessed by panelists from both the UK and India. The winners of the competition included Mr.D.Madhur, Mr.Kausik Naramsetty, Mr.V.Sai Krishna Teja, Mr.Y.Raj Sandeep and Mr.Pavan Kalyan supervised by Dr.Avinash Bagul from NICMAR Pune and Ms.Kalyani S Nangade, Ms.Ajesh John Kumar, Mr.Kishan Rameshbhai Vora and Mr.Monik Pravin Patel supervised by Dr.Ehsan Asnaashari from NTU, UK.
Supervisors from NICMAR Pune included: Dr.Milind Jagtap, Dr.Sudhir Ambekar, Dr. Sagar Malsane, Dr.Nilesh Patil and Prof.Murali Jagannathan. Further, Dr.Shobha Ramalingam and Dr.Anand Prakash from NICMAR, Pune supervised and coordinated the project along with Dr.Amrit Sagoo and Dr.Ehsan Asnaashari from NTU, UK.

Dr. Rohan V. Nalawade

Assistant Professor, Kolhapur Institute of Technology's College of Engineering (Autonomous), Kolhapur

Courses offered with reference to Lean Concept: Since 2020-21, We are offering Diploma in BIM Technology (One Year) under UGC-NSQF scheme as Vocational Skill development Program (https://www.kitcoek.in/vocational-courses-at-kit-college-kolhapur.php). Content and success stories of placements is available on this link. Presently 21 Students are undergoing this program. Application of Lean and Green for construction is one of the subject in this curriculum.

Courses offered with reference to Lean Concept: Since 2022-23, We are offering B.Tech Honors in Civil Engineering with specialisation in Lean Construction Technology as an additional 18 credit program to regular UG Civil Engineering program. This Program includes a single subject concerned with Lean Concept and Construction management from III semester to VII Semester of Civil Engineering Curriculum. It is required to clear all subjects including Lean subjects in the first attempt to avail Honors degree to admitted students. Presently 8 students have cleared eligibility and enrolled for this program.

Dr. K.S. Anandh

Assistant Professor (Sr.G), SRM Institute of Science of Technology

Courses: The following course has one unit which discusses the fundamentals and foundation level of Lean Construction. One is for undergraduate, B. Tech Civil Engineering, and the other for M. Tech Construction Engineering and Management. SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION METHODS (UG); MODERNISTIC APPROACH IN CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT (PG).

Projects : M.Tech in Construction Management students are involved in researching the domain of Lean construction (LC). Nearly seven projects have been carried out in the field of Lean Construction. We are encouraging students and faculties to participate in LC research in terms of projects actively. Nearly 7 Papers have been published in Scopus from various faculties in Construction Engineering Management pertain to LC. More than 6 Faculties are attempting to do research work in LC. But still, due to a lack of awareness, Industry connections and knowledge in the domain area, the level of projects happening is at the budding level. In upcoming years, we will contribute towards LC.
